About the Authors: David Brewer (1837–1910) served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1889 until his death. A graduate of Yale University, he attended Albany Law School. Brewer served on the Kansas Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals before being appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

John Marshall Harlan (1833–1911) was born in Kentucky and pursued a career as a lawyer and politician. He served on the Supreme Court for thirty-four years, becoming famous for his dissents in such cases as Plessy v. Ferguson. He became known as "the...
