About the Author: Samuel Milton Jones' (1846–1904) employment philosophy, based on a practical application of the Golden Rule, gained him a local reputation as a liberal, and the popular nickname of Golden Rule Jones. His reputation, combined with his community activities, led to his nomination as the compromise mayoral candidate of the Republican Party in 1897.
