Political Events
The former vice-regent of Novgorod defeats his fratricidal brother Svyatopolk (the Accursed) and becomes grand prince of Kiev (see 1015). He begins a 35-year reign as Jaroslav I (the Wise) in which he will regain Galicia from the Poles; suppress Lithuanian, Estonian, and Finnish tribes to expand Kiev's holdings on the Baltic; defeat Pechenegan nomads to the south; codify Russian law; and build cities, churches, monasteries, and schools.
